4.    The Spring 2010 Quarterly Meeting will be held in Asheville, NC at the Days Inn Asheville/Mall (201 Tunnel Rd, Asheville, NC 28805-1819, Tel: 828-252-4000) on the weekend of 16-17-18 April 2010, hosted by Bill Long. Further details in the next chapter newsletter.

5.    The possibility of the Summer 2010 Quarterly Meeting being held in Madisonville, KY [not far from Fort Campbell, KY and the 5th SFG(A)] is being investigated by Judy Hines. The tentative time frame would be July, 2010. Further details TBD.

6.    The possibility/practicality of holding the Fall 2010 Quarterly Meeting in the Fayetteville, NC area is being investigated by the tentative host, Stan Shank. Further details will be provided when known.

7.    Around the Chapter

- Sick Call
Carol Sue Stickney, wife of chapter member Kenneth D. (Ken) Stickney, D-2591L, has been having a really rough time of it. As many of you are aware, she suffered from an undisclosed brain tumor which resulted in her having what appeared to be either a stroke or a heart attack. Then, after they successfully removed the tumor, and Carol was up and around and (we thought) well on her way toward complete recovery, she started having severe reactions to her medications.
After several iterations of in-and-out of the hospital, she was admitted to a nursing facility in southeast Tennessee where they can help her with physical therapy so that she can better take care of herself when she is released to go home. (When that will occur is still unknown.)
In the meantime, reports are that Carol Sue is not very happy with either her condition or her progress. She’s been having bouts of depression and anxiety, and could certainly use some encouragement from her many friends in Chapter XXXIII, SFA.

- Flowers of the Forest:
The Fall months continue to be cruel to Chapter XXXIII: three more of our comrades, and the wife of a member have passed on, each leaving a grieving family and many friends and teammates behind. Many of you have seen these TAPS notices as they were sent via e-mail. They are repeated here for those members who have not seen them previously.

SFC (R) Franklin D. (Jack) Galloway, A-1697L (Photograph not yet available), a member of Chapter XXXIII, Special Forces Association, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009 following an extended illness. He was 76 years old.
Jack was a veteran of both the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. He served with the 187th Regimental Combat Team and the 24th Infantry Division in Korea in 1950-51 and served two tours in Vietnam (1965-66) and (1967-68). During his second tour in RVN with MACV Team 37 supporting 5th SFG(A), Jack was seriously wounded and was medevaced to Walter Reed Army Hospital, from which he was medically retired in 1968 with 100% disability. His military decorations include the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and numerous overseas service ribbons.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dong Sook (Kim); his son, Rex; and many extended family members in the Brevard, NC area.
The family had already held a visitation by the time that the chapter was notified of Jack’s death. His remains were interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

MSG (R) Vladimir J. (“Mike”) Mohar, D-2740L, a member of Chapter XXXIII, Special Forces Association, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2009 in the Dorn VA Medical Center, Columbia, SC. He was 76 years old. Born in Yugoslavia, Mike was one of the original members of the 10th SFG(A). Young Mike Mohar He was well known as an outstanding radio operator and an accomplished linguist: he was fluent in five Middle European languages and conversant in at least two others. Because of his extensive knowledge of the European area, languages and customs, he spent the majority (15 years) of his Army career in the 10th SFG(A).
However, he also served a tour in the 77th/7th SFG(A) (to include service in Laos as part of the WHITE STAR MTT), and a later tour with the 5th SFG(A) in RVN. Mike retired from the Army with over 24 years service.
Following his retirement from military service, Mike started a second career with the United States Postal Service with whom he served for 18 years.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Georgine; their sons, Michael and Steven; daughter, Cynthia; three grandchildren; sisters, Yvonne and Donna; brother, Cyril and wife, Alice.
His funeral service was held on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Dunbar Funeral Home, Columbia, SC 29205-2804. (Tel: 803-771-7990). Visitation began prior to the service. Following the funeral service, the family and friends proceeded in convoy to the internment service held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

SFC (R) Herman S. Daves, M-5259L, passed away at 9:30 am Sunday morning, December 13, 2009, following a prolonged battle with cancer. At the time of his passing he was under hospice care. He was 74 years old.
Herman was an original member of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and trained with that unit from its inception at Fort Bragg. He deployed with the Group from Fort Bragg to Bad Tolz in 1953 and served there until 1956.
Herman DavesHerman's served two combat tours in Vietnam in the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile). On his first tour he participated in the Ia Drang Valley campaign in 1965-66. Later, on his second tour with the Cav, he was severely wounded, which required his being medevaced to the USA and ultimately led to his medical discharge with 100% disability.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rose Marie; a daughter, Linda Daves Elmore, Loganville, GA; a step-son, James Giaquintto, Somerset, NJ; 6 grandchildren; Sisters - Ethel Bryant, CA; Amilda McAfee, Sewanee, GA; Mary Ruth Reeves, Gainesville, GA; Pauline Wallace, Cedartown, GA; and Betty Jean Harris, Flowery Branch, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received visitors at the Bernhardt Funeral Home, Ellijay, GA 30540, Tel: 706-635-4325 on Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18. Funeral services were on Saturday, December 19, 2009 in the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home. Following these services and movement by funeral procession, internment services with full military honors were held at the Flat Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Brenda Stamper, 61 of Richmond, KY, wife of Tom Stamper (Photograph not yet available), passed away on Sun, Dec. 27, 2009 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Mrs. Stamper was born in Winchester on April 5, 1948 to the late Leo P. and Viola W. Cruse. She was retired from the Lexington Bluegrass Army Depot and was a member of the Grace Bible Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a stepson, Thomas M. Stamper of Richmond; stepdaughter, Lenoa S. Lively of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters; four step grandchildren; a twin sister, Betty C. (Dorsey) Wilson of Winchester; a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles; and special friends, Joyce Pasley, Deanna Stone, and Marjorie Palmer. She was preceded in death by a son, Roy Clark Galloway IV and a brother, Robert C. Cruse.
Funeral services were conducted Wed., Dec. 30 at Scobee Funeral Home by Rev. Lee Cruse. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery. Visitation was Tues. at Scobee Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Grace Bible Church, 117 N. Main St., Winchester, KY 40391.
